Bring the tropical taste of Latin America to your home with these 5 delicious and refreshing cocktail recipes. If you are a non-drinker there are alcohol-free versions of the following recipes.

1. Caipirinha – the national cocktail of Brazil

Caipirinha is the national cocktail of Brazil. Caipirinha gets its distinctive flavor from cachaça, which is a sugarcane rum, also known as Brazilian rum. It’s original and easy to make.

Ingredients and preparation:

1 lime

2 ounces of cachaça

white or yellow sugar

ice cubes

Cut the lime into quarters. Add sugar and crush the pieces with the pestle. Add the cachaça and stir to mix. Add the ice cubes and stir again.

Alcohol-free Caipirinha: replace cachaça with ginger beer.

2. Piña Colada –

the national cocktail of Puerto Rico

Piña Colada has been the national cocktail of Puerto Rico since 1978. Piña Colada is a sweet cocktail made with pineapple juice, coconut cream and rum.

Ingredients and preparation:

3 ounces light rum

3 tablespoons coconut cream

3 tablespoons crushed pineapple

Put all ingredients into an electric blender with 2 cups of crushed ice. Blend at a high speed for a short length of time. Strain into a collins glass. Voilà!

Alcohol-free Piña Colada: replace rum with pineapple juice.

3. Cuba libre – the national cocktail of Cuba

Cuba libre is a sweet and refreshing cocktail, in the other parts of the world known as Rum and Coke.

Ingredients and preparation:

juice of 1/2 lime

2 ounces light rum

4 ounces cola

Squeeze the juice of half a lime into a collins glass. Add ice cubes, rum and cola and stir well.

4. Macuá – the national cocktail of Nicaragua

Macuá is a delicious cocktail made with white rum and fruit juices. In October 2006 Macuá was chosen as the national cocktail of Nicaragua.

Ingredients and preparation:

2 ounces white rum

2 ounces guava juice

1 ounce lemon juice

2 teaspoons sugar

Shake the ingredients together in a mixer with ice. Strain into a highball glass over more ice.

Alcohol-free Macuá: just omit the rum.


Margarita – Mexico

Beside Tequila, Margarita is one of the synonyms for Mexico. With interesting background and a unique taste Margarita came to be one of the most popular cocktails worldwide. February 22 is the National Margarita Day in the USA.

Ingredients and preparation:

1 1/2 ounces tequila

1/2 ounce triple sec (orange flavored liqueur)

1 ounce lime juice

coarse salt

Salt the rim of the glass. In a blender combine tequila, triple sec and lime juice. Add ice, blend until smooth. Fill the glass up to the rim and serve.

Alcohol-free Margarita: replace alcohol with Sweet and Sour Mix.
